Class Descriptions

We try to place our students in classes according to age and ability, but it is ultimately the instructor’s professional opinion to decide which level class is appropriate for an individual student.  A free, fifteen minute class-placement evaluation can be scheduled with the front desk (248-313-0326).

Pre-School Program

“Discover Dance” (2-3 years old) – A super fun way to introduce your child to the joys of dancing and tumbling!  This half hour “parent and child” class is a great opportunity for your child to get a head start on basic motor, fine-motor and social skills.  It is also the perfect time for you to bond with your little one…they grow up too fast!  This class incorporates all kinds of basic dance, tumbling skills and musical skills.  A typical class will cover counting, singing, moving, and much more.  It is designed for the child who is asserting independence, but is not yet ready to be in a class without a parent or caregiver.  It is an energetic class that is sure to hold your child’s attention.  (This class is not only limited to parents;  grandparents, nannies, and caregivers are welcome!  If siblings or friends are enrolled in this class too, please allow one “parent” per child.)

Focus:

  • Refining motor skills and learning new basic skills such as jumping from foot to foot, hopping, balancing, walking on tip-toes with stretched knees, making shapes with the body, somersaults, donkey kicks, etc.
  • Counting with music, singing, pantomiming and using props and musical instruments
  • Learning short sequencing
  • Performing for the parents (children enthusiastically show new skills learned)
  • A ribbon is awarded at the end of each completed session (bring your cameras)

 

“Explore Dance” (3 1/2 -4 years old)- This is the class where your child gets to go into the classroom with the teacher and other students all by her/himself!  Some of these classes consist of a combination of two different kinds of dance and/or tumble.  (For example, Pre-Ballet/Tap).  These energetic classes will aim to spark and nurture your child’s creativity in a FUN! environment.  Students will explore the different kinds of dance and movement with something new each week.

Focus:

  • Participation in theme weeks such as Bring a Friend Week or Halloween Week
  • Counting with music, singing, pantomiming, using props and musical instruments
  • Learning fun dance and tumble combinations/ sequencing
  • Learning muscle names and how they work
  • Learn dance vocabularly and how to apply it
  • Stretching and strengthening muscles
  • “Showtime” opportunities to perform new skills and short combinations during classes and at the end of the session for the parents.  June Recital or mini performance/ribbon ceremony at end of year or each session.

Dance Program (5 years old & up)

Boys and Girls Ballet – This traditional and disciplined art form primarily focuses on grace and excellent posture.  Ballet is vitally important because it serves as the foundation for all dance styles.  Ballet, when trained and executed properly, will give you strength.  Students will learn how to carry themselves and execute movements in the most powerful and exquisite ways.  Ballet is absolutely necessary for serious dancers or students who want to improve other areas of their dance training.  Football players, gymnasts and figure skaters should take Ballet to improve in their main field of exerptise.

Pointe– a continuation of Ballet for only the most advanced and serious of ballerinas.  This class brings the ballerina onto the “tips of her toes” with special Pointe or toe shoes.  The ballerina is no longer practicing “en demi-point”; she is now “en Pointe.”  Students must have many years of Ballet training and be at least 11 years old to test into Pointe.

Jazz– a highly energetic form of dance with American (and primarily southern) roots.  Jazz focuses on strong lines, sharp movements, torso contractions and lots of turns, leaps and jumps.  Jazz encourages students to find and develop their own style within a structured technique.

Modern– is a disciplined form of dance designed for the mature and serious dancer.  This dance style uses the technique of ballet, yet it seeks to explore all ways of moving.  Consequently, modern breaks away from the confines of ballet.  For example, modern allows students to flex their feet and “give in” to gravity by falling to the floor then recovering to standing position.  This is an excellent class for students who want to be accepted into a college dance program or become professional.

Jazz Tricks & Turns– a class designed for the intermediate to advanced level dancer that works specifically on leaps, turns and progressive jazz combinations across the floor.  Students are encouraged to improve their technique by developing the ability to break down movements and by taking corrections from the instructors. A perfect supplemental class for high school pom pon  and cheer teams.

Lyricala class for serious dance students who have a strong Ballet and Jazz background (students are required to take at least 1 Ballet and 1 Jazz class while taking Lyrical).  Lyrical incoroporates the foundation and discipline of Ballet with the freedom and technique of Jazz.  Lyrical distiniguishes itself from other dance styles by relying heavily on the emotional expression of the dancer to tell a story.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AFVvSrYIDo

Tap– a form of dance where rhythm, timing and creating different kinds of sounds, with special tap shoes, is emphasized.  Tap is a good class for all ages, but it is especially good for pre-school and beginner level students.  It focuses on counting with music and developing a strong sense of rhythm, which is essential in all types of dance.  Ankles and confidence will stretgthen when taking Tap.

Hip Hop– the latest and ever-evolving dance-craze in popular culture that mostly focuses on moving and dancing to popular hip hop, or hip hop-influenced, music.  This dance style is rooted in “breaking” (“break dancing”) and, what is now dubbed as, “Hip Hop” music.  Both the dance and music styles mutually erupted in New York City in the 1970’s.  Since then, Hip Hop has continued evolving to develop the dancer’s individual style by using smooth and staccato movements, experiementation with rhythm and syncopation, and grooving .  Other styles of dance that are closely associated with Hip Hop include Popping, Locking, Breaking, Clowning and Krumping.

Breakdance– also known as “B-boying” or “B-girling” by its practitioners and followers, is a dynamic style of dance that emeraged out of Hip Hop culture.  Some say that the Hip Hop movement was born in the South Bronx of New York City during the late 20th century.  During this time, it was no uncommon to see groups of young people carrying  carboard and a boom box through the streets. Breakdancing is one of the many elements of Hip Hop culture. The unique form of dancing is very acrobatic and creative. It requires a tremendous amount of dertermination and strength.  Breakdance has been performed in countless shows, music videos on MTV and at dance clubs.

Acro– dance combined with the floor segment of gymnastics.  This discipline is not a complete form of dance although dance and tumbling directly benefit each other.  This class focuses on basic to intermediate tumbling skills such as forward rolls, cartwheels, handstands, bridges, bridge-kickovers, back-walkovers, etc.  All of these skills develop strength, stamina and flexibility in the upper and lower body.

Examples: Shannon Miller, Nastia Liukin, Chellsie Memmel, Alicia Sacramone.

Music Theatre– (Available during periodic Saturday workshops only.) a type of theatre art that incoporates singing and dancing.  Students will develop self-confidence as they learn techniques of the stage and theatre.  Learning how to project voice from on stage, improvisation, acting in many different characters, singing and highly-characterized dance movements are just a few components of this fun and entertaining genre of theatre.

Examples: High School Musical, A Chorus Line, The Sound of Music, Grease, South Pacific, Ain’t Misbehavin’.

Ballroom– (Available for private lessons only.  Perfect for wedding dance preparation!) a type of dance that is performed by two people, also known as a “couple” or “figure”.  Ballroom has its roots in the latter half of 18th century England where nobles and “high society” would attend royal balls.  The most popular dance at these social events was the Waltz.   Evolving along the way, ballroom eventually worked its way into the working class.  Today, there are many styles of ballroom ranging from the traditional Viennese Waltz to the Tango, Cha Cha to Jive, and more.

Whether you have no dance or fitness training, or you are looking to spruce up your dance technique and figure, we have a class for you.  The class minimum is only 4 people, so bring your friends for a fun workout!  Currently offering adult dance and fitness classes in: Adult Ballet, Adult Tap, Adult Yoga & Adult Werq (Hip Hop Fitness)!
